A breathing space

It was our friend who first noticed –
the easy distance between us
as side by side we skirted the reed bed
where wild geese over-winter.

She was trying out her camera,
following a pace behind us on the path
that glistened in the sun
after a night of frost

experimenting with her lens
bringing us into close-up
and some attempt at focus.
Overhead, the geese flew in formation.

We walked not shoulder brushing shoulder
nor gloved hand in hand
but in a steady tandem as if
an invisible measure ruled out

a breathing space between us,
composed of light creating
the shape between two letters,
clasped in a constant embrace.
